এই সংস্থাটি ১৮৯৩ সালের ২১শে ফেব্রুয়ারি তারিখে প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয়েছে। এটি প্রতিষ্ঠার ১৯ বছর পর ফুটবলের সর্বোচ্চ সংস্থা ফিফার সদস্যপদ লাভ করে।
এএফএ প্রতিষ্ঠার ২৩ বছর পর ১৯১৬ সালে সংস্থাটি তাদের আঞ্চলিক সংস্থা কনমেবলের সদস্যপদ লাভ করে। এই সংস্থার সদর দপ্তর আর্জেন্টিনার রাজধানী বুয়েন্স আইয়ারসে অবস্থিত।
